Changes in population from migration and immigration

Positive international immigration was overshadowed by losses from interprovincial migration, resulting in a net decrease of 4,254 people to Ontario’s population in the first quarter of 2025. This was a reversal from the net gain of nearly 91,000 people from the first quarter of 2024.

Changes in population from movement within Canada

Some 18,540 people moved to Ontario from other provinces in the first quarter of 2025, up 0.7% from a year earlier. A total of 23,777 people left the province for elsewhere in Canada in the first quarter, a decrease of 10% from the same period in 2024. The result was a net loss of 5,237 people from Ontario’s population in the first quarter. This was a decrease of 34.6% from the first quarter of 2024.

Changes in population from immigration

International immigration added 983 people to Ontario’s population in the first quarter of 2025. This was a decrease of 99% from the same period in 2024.
