St. Catharines-Niagara Employment Trends

The unemployment rate in St. Catharines - Niagara was 7.6% as of December 2021, up 0.1% from the previous month. The unemployment rate stood 5.5% below the peak from June 2020 and is below the long-run average.

There were 4,300 fewer full-time jobs in December 2021 compared to a month earlier. A gain of 900 part-time positions led to a decrease of 3,400 total jobs in December.

Full-time employment was still down 5,200 jobs from the peak in September 2021.

The number of full-time jobs in December was up from the previous month in agriculture, natural resources, construction, the financial sector, professional & scientific services, education, accommodation & food services, and public administration.

Full-time job losses in December occurred in utilities, manufacturing, trade services, transportation & warehousing, business & building services, healthcare, and information & cultural services.
