Changes in population from migration and immigration
Positive international immigration overshadowed losses from inter-provincial migration, resulting in a net increase of 30,181 people to British Columbia’s population in the fourth quarter of 2023. This was an increase of 1.4% from the fourth quarter of 2022.
Changes in population from movement within Canada
Some 7,892 people moved to British Columbia from other provinces in the fourth quarter of 2023, down 22.3% from a year earlier. A total of 10,620 people left the province for elsewhere in Canada in the fourth quarter, a decrease of 12.3% from the same period in 2022. The result was a net loss of 2,728 people from British Columbia’s population in the fourth quarter. This was an increase of 39.5% from the fourth quarter of 2022.
Changes in population from immigration
International immigration added 32,909 people to British Columbia’s population in the fourth quarter of 2023. This was an increase of 3.8% from the same period in 2022.
