Vancouver Island Employment Trends

The unemployment rate in Nanaimo was 7.4% as of June 2026, down 1.1% from the previous month. The unemployment rate stood 11.7% below the peak from April 2011 but remains above the long-run average.

There were 1,100 more full-time jobs in June 2026 compared to a month earlier. Combined with a gain of 700 part-time positions, this led to an increase of 1,800 total jobs in June.

Full-time employment was down 8,100 jobs from the peak in March 2024 but stood 2,800 jobs above the trough in January 2025.
