Vancouver Island Employment Trends

The unemployment rate in Nanaimo was 5.7% as of August 2026, down 0.7% from the previous month. The unemployment rate stood 13.4% below the peak from April 2011 and is below the long-run average.

There were 700 more full-time jobs in August 2026 compared to a month earlier. Combined with a loss of 100 part-time positions, this led to an increase of 600 total jobs in August.

Full-time employment was down 6,600 jobs from the peak in March 2024 but stood 4,400 jobs above the trough in January 2025.

* All figures are seasonally adjusted, 3-month moving averages. Seasonal adjustment removes normal seasonal fluctuations.
