Vancouver Island Employment Trends

 

The unemployment rate in Nanaimo was 8.7% as of April 2026, up 0.8% from the previous month. The unemployment rate stood 10.4% below the peak from April 2011 but remains above the long-run average.

There were 600 more full-time jobs in April 2026 compared to a month earlier. Combined with an unchanged number of part-time positions, this led to an increase of 600 total jobs in April.

Full-time employment was down 10,200 jobs from the peak in March 2024 but stood 600 jobs above the trough in March 2026.
