Vancouver Island Employment Trends
The unemployment rate in Nanaimo was 6.4% as of July 2026, down 1% from the previous month. The unemployment rate stood 12.7% below the peak from April 2011 and is below the long-run average.
There were 1,000 more full-time jobs in July 2026 compared to a month earlier. Combined with a loss of 300 part-time positions, this led to an increase of 700 total jobs in July.
Full-time employment was down 7,000 jobs from the peak in March 2024 but stood 3,900 jobs above the trough in January 2025.
