Vancouver Island Employment Trends

 

The unemployment rate in Nanaimo was 6.6% as of January 2026, up 0.1% from the previous month. The unemployment rate stood 12.5% below the peak from April 2011 but remains above the long-run average.

There were 900 fewer full-time jobs in January 2026 compared to a month earlier. Combined with an unchanged number of part-time positions, this led to a decrease of 900 total jobs in January.

Full-time employment was down 7,200 jobs from the peak in March 2024 but stood 3,400 jobs above the trough in April 2025.
