Changes in population from migration and immigration

Negative net international immigration overshadowed gains from interprovincial migration, resulting in a net decrease of 11,933 people to British Columbia’s population in the first quarter of 2026. This was a reversal from the net gain of 673 people in the first quarter of 2025.

Changes in population from movement within Canada

Some 13,017 people moved to British Columbia from other provinces in the first quarter of 2026, up 0.7% from a year earlier. A total of 11,436 people left the province for elsewhere in Canada in the first quarter, a decrease of 19.3% from the same period in 2025. The result was a net gain of 1,581 people to British Columbia’s population in the first quarter. This was a reversal from the net loss of 1,234 people from the first quarter of 2025.

Changes in population from immigration

Net international immigration subtracted 13,514 people from British Columbia’s population in the first quarter of 2026. This was a reversal from the net gain of 1,907 people from the same period in 2025.
