Hamilton Employment Trends

The unemployment rate in Hamilton was 7.7% as of May 2021, up 0.4% from the previous month. The unemployment rate stood 4.5% below the peak from June 2020 but remains above the long-run average.

There were 600 more full-time jobs in May 2021 compared to a month earlier. A loss of 2,700 part-time positions led to a decrease of 2,100 total jobs in May.

Full-time employment was still down 7,500 jobs from the peak in October 2019 but stood 26,600 jobs above the recent trough in June 2020.

The number of full-time jobs in May was up from the previous month in natural resources, utilities, transportation & warehousing, the financial sector, professional & scientific services, healthcare, and accommodation & food services.

Full-time job losses in May occurred in agriculture, construction, manufacturing, trade services, business & building services, education, information & cultural services, and public administration.
