Calgary Employment Trends

The unemployment rate in Calgary was 8.2% as of December 2021, up 0.1% from the previous month. The unemployment rate stood 7.5% below the peak from June 2020 but remains above the long-run average.

There were 3,500 more full-time jobs in December 2021 compared to a month earlier. A loss of 2,700 part-time positions led to an increase of 800 total jobs in December.

Full-time employment was still down 24,800 jobs from the peak in August 2019 but stood 64,300 jobs above the trough in June 2020.

The number of full-time jobs in December was up from the previous month in agriculture, construction, trade services, transportation & warehousing, professional & scientific services, information & cultural services, and public administration.

Full-time job losses in December occurred in natural resources, utilities, manufacturing, the financial sector, business & building services, education, healthcare, and accommodation & food services.
