Changes in population from migration and immigration
Positive international immigration overshadowed losses from to inter-provincial migration, resulting in a net increase of 3,243 people to Manitoba’s population in the fourth quarter of 2021. This was well above the number of people who came during the previous fourth quarter and was the biggest quarterly gain since the second quarter of 2019.
Changes in population from movement within Canada
Some 1,574 people moved to Manitoba from other provinces in the fourth quarter of 2021. This was up 8.1% from a year earlier. More people came to Manitoba from Ontario compared to a year earlier.
A total of 4,215 people left the province for elsewhere in Canada in the fourth quarter, an increase of 27.9% from the same period in 2020. More people leaving for British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario accounted for most of this rise.
The result was a net loss of 2,641 people from Manitoba’s population in the fourth quarter. This was an increase of 43.6% from the fourth quarter of 2020.
Changes in population from immigration
International immigration added 5,884 people to Manitoba’s population in the fourth quarter of 2021. This was an increase of 110.8% from the same period in 2020.
