Changes in population from migration and immigration
Negative net international immigration added to losses from interprovincial migration, resulting in a net decrease of 33,609 people to Ontario’s population in the first quarter of 2026. This was an increase of 1472% from the net loss in the first quarter of 2025.
Changes in population from movement within Canada
Some 16,582 people moved to Ontario from other provinces in the first quarter of 2026, down 10.4% from a year earlier. A total of 22,356 people left the province for elsewhere in Canada in the first quarter, a decrease of 6.2% from the same period in 2025. The result was a net loss of 5,774 people from Ontario’s population in the first quarter. This was an increase of 8.5% from the net loss from the first quarter of 2025.
Changes in population from immigration
Net international immigration subtracted 27,835 people from Ontario’s population in the first quarter of 2026. This was a reversal from the net gain of 3,182 people from the same period in 2025.
