Ontario Migration

Changes in population from migration and immigration:

Positive international immigration added to gains due to inter-provincial migration, resulting in a net increase of 47,638 people to Ontario’s population in the third quarter of 2019. This was an increase of 22.4% from the previous third quarter.

Changes in population from movement within Canada:

Some 23,686 people moved to Ontario from other provinces in the third quarter of 2019. This was down 3.7% from a year earlier. Fewer people came to Ontario from British Columbia and Quebec compared to a year earlier.

A total of 20,727 people left the province for elsewhere in Canada in the third quarter, an increase of 17.5% from the same period in 2018. More people leaving for virtually all other provinces accounted for the increase.

The result was a net gain of 2,959 people to Ontario’s population in the third quarter. This was a decrease of 57.3% from the third quarter of 2018.

Changes in population from immigration:

International immigration added 44,679 people to Ontario’s population in the third quarter of 2019. This was an increase of 39.7% from the same period in 2018 and marked the highest level in more than 15 years.
