Changes in population from migration and immigration

Positive international immigration added to gains from inter-provincial migration, resulting in a net increase of 40,950 people to Alberta’s population in the fourth quarter of 2023. This was an increase of 20.1% from the fourth quarter of 2022.

Changes in population from movement within Canada

Some 17,556 people moved to Alberta from other provinces in the fourth quarter of 2023, down 10.3% from a year earlier. A total of 7,643 people left the province for elsewhere in Canada in the fourth quarter, a decrease of 15.6% from the same period in 2022. The result was a net gain of 9,913 people to Alberta’s population in the fourth quarter. This was a decrease of 5.8% from the fourth quarter of 2022.

Changes in population from immigration

International immigration added 31,037 people to Alberta’s population in the fourth quarter of 2023. This was an increase of 31.6% from the same period in 2022.
