Changes in population from migration and immigration

Positive international immigration overshadowed losses from interprovincial migration, resulting in a net increase of 37,705 people to British Columbia’s population in the first quarter of 2024. This was an increase of 2.3% from the first quarter of 2023.

Changes in population from movement within Canada

Some 14,113 people moved to British Columbia from other provinces in the first quarter of 2024, down 14.8% from a year earlier. A total of 16,679 people left the province for elsewhere in Canada in the first quarter, a decrease of 4.8% from the same period in 2023. The result was a net loss of 2,566 people from British Columbia’s population in the first quarter. This was an increase of 166.7% from the first quarter of 2023.

Changes in population from immigration

International immigration added 40,271 people to British Columbia’s population in the first quarter of 2024. This was an increase of 6.5% from the same period in 2023.
