Changes in population from migration and immigration
Positive international immigration added to gains from inter-provincial migration, resulting in a net increase of 41,214 people to Alberta’s population in the fourth quarter of 2022. This was an increase of 221.4% from the fourth quarter of 2021.
Changes in population from movement within Canada
Some 20,514 people moved to Alberta from other provinces in the fourth quarter of 2022, up 46.8% from a year earlier. More people moved from British Columbia and Ontario compared to the fourth quarter of 2021.
A total of 8,980 people left the province for elsewhere in Canada in the fourth quarter, a decrease of 17.2% from the same period in 2021. Fewer people left the province for British Columbia compared to a year earlier.
The result was a net gain of 11,534 people to Alberta’s population in the fourth quarter. This was an increase of 269.1% from the fourth quarter of 2021.
Changes in population from immigration
International immigration added 29,680 people to Alberta’s population in the fourth quarter of 2022. This was an increase of 206% from the same period in 2021.
