Changes in population from migration and immigration
Positive international immigration was overshadowed by losses from interprovincial migration, resulting in a net decrease of 1,385 people to British Columbia’s population in the first quarter of 2025. This was a reversal from the net gain of more than 40,000 people from the first quarter of 2024.
Changes in population from movement within Canada
Some 12,919 people moved to British Columbia from other provinces in the first quarter of 2025, down 8.9% from a year earlier. A total of 14,555 people left the province for elsewhere in Canada in the first quarter, a decrease of 10.4% from the same period in 2024. The result was a net loss of 1,636 people from British Columbia’s population in the first quarter. This was a decrease of 20.2% from the first quarter of 2024.
Changes in population from immigration
International immigration added 251 people to British Columbia’s population in the first quarter of 2025. This was a decrease of 99.4% from the same period in 2024.
