Changes in population from migration and immigration

Positive international immigration added to gains from interprovincial migration, resulting in a net increase of 45,375 people to Alberta’s population in the first quarter of 2024. This was an increase of 4.5% from the first quarter of 2023.

Changes in population from movement within Canada

Some 27,538 people moved to Alberta from other provinces in the first quarter of 2024, down 6.7% from a year earlier. A total of 15,056 people left the province for elsewhere in Canada in the first quarter, a decrease of 1.9% from the same period in 2023. The result was a net gain of 12,482 people to Alberta’s population in the first quarter. This was a decrease of 11.9% from the first quarter of 2023.

Changes in population from immigration

International immigration added 32,893 people to Alberta’s population in the first quarter of 2024. This was an increase of 12.5% from the same period in 2023.
