Ontario Employment Trends
The unemployment rate in Ontario was 8% as of August 2021, down 0.6% from the previous month. The unemployment rate stood 4.3% below the peak from July 2020 but remains above the long-run average.
There were 22,000 more full-time jobs in August 2021 compared to a month earlier. A gain of 58,800 part-time positions led to an increase of 80,800 total jobs in August.
Full-time employment was still down 106,600 jobs from the peak in February 2020 but stood 542,500 jobs above the recent trough in June 2020.
The number of full-time jobs in August was up from the previous month in agriculture, utilities, construction, transportation & warehousing, professional & scientific services, business & building services, education, accommodation & food services, and public administration.
Full-time job losses in August occurred in natural resources, manufacturing, trade services, the financial sector, healthcare, and information & cultural services.
