Changes in population from migration and immigration
Positive international immigration added to gains from inter-provincial migration, resulting in a net increase of 52,582 people to Alberta’s population in the third quarter of 2022. This was an increase of 206.9% from the third quarter of 2021 and was the first time that total net migration into Alberta was above 35,000.
Changes in population from movement within Canada
Some 32,816 people moved to Alberta from other provinces in the third quarter of 2022. This was up 55.1% from a year earlier. There were significantly more people moving to Alberta from British Columbia and Ontario compared to the second quarter of 2021.
A total of 13,531 people left the province for elsewhere in Canada in the third quarter, a decrease of 21.9% from the same period in 2021. More people moved to British Columbia and Ontario and Nova Scotia relative to the previous third quarter.
The result was a net gain of 19,285 people to Alberta’s population in the third quarter. This was an increase of 403.8% from the third quarter of 2021 and was a new record.
Changes in population from immigration
International immigration added 33,297 people to Alberta’s population in the third quarter of 2022. This was an increase of 150.3% from the same period in 2021. and marked the first time in history that net international immigration surpassed 30,000 people.
