Saint John Employment Trends

The unemployment rate in Saint John, New Brunswick was 6.4% as of February 2023, up 0.3% from the previous month. The unemployment rate stood 5.7% below the peak from June 2020 and is below the long-run average.

There were 500 fewer full-time jobs in February 2023 compared to a month earlier. A loss of 500 part-time positions led to a decrease of 1,000 total jobs in February.

Full-time employment was still down 3,600 jobs from the peak in April 2017 but stood 6,400 jobs above the trough in May 2020.

The number of full-time jobs in February was up from the previous month in agriculture, transportation & warehousing, the financial sector, professional & scientific services, education, information & cultural services, accommodation & food services, and public administration.

Full-time job losses in February occurred in natural resources, utilities, construction, manufacturing, trade services, business & building services, and healthcare.
