Ontario Employment Trends
The unemployment rate in Ontario was 6.5% as of December 2021, down 0.4% from the previous month. The unemployment rate stood 5.8% below the peak from July 2020 and is below the long-run average.
There were 33,800 more full-time jobs in December 2021 compared to a month earlier. A gain of 16,800 part-time positions led to an increase of 50,600 total jobs in December.
Full-time employment has recovered since bottoming out in June 2020 and now stands at a record high.
The number of full-time jobs in December was up from the previous month in trade services, the financial sector, education, healthcare, and information & cultural services.
Full-time job losses in December occurred in transportation & warehousing, professional & scientific services, and accommodation & food services.
