Changes in population from migration and immigration:

Inter-provincial migration and international immigration added 9,193 people to Alberta’s population in the third quarter of 2011. This was an increase of 13 per cent compared to the same period in 2010.

 

There was a significant increase in inter-provincial migration to Alberta, rising to more than double the levels recorded in the third quarter of 2010.

 

International immigration added 6,057 people to Alberta’s population in the third quarter of 2011, a decrease of 13 per cent compared to levels in the third quarter of 2010.

   
   

 

   
   

Changes in population from movement within Canada:

Some 23,974 people moved to Alberta from other parts of the country in the third quarter of 2011, a 10 per cent increase from a year earlier. The strongest increases were among migrants moving from British Columbia and Ontario.

 

There were 20,838 people who moved to other provinces in the third quarter, edging up one per cent from the same period in 2010. An increase in the number of people leaving for British Columbia was offset by fewer people moving to Ontario.

 

The result was a net gain of 3,136 people to the province’s population, more than doubling the net gain from the third quarter of 2010 when the province gained 1,155 people from elsewhere in Canada.
